Rock Size?Frequency Distributions at the InSight Landing Site, Mars

چکیده

Rocks around the InSight lander were measured in orthoimages of near field (<10 m), panoramas far (<40 and a high-resolution orbital image (1 km2). The cumulative fractional area versus diameter size-frequency distributions for four areas fall on exponential model curves used estimating hazards landing spacecraft. rock abundance varies from 0.6% sand pebble-rich to east within Homestead hollow ?3–5% progressively rockier south, north, west. entire is just over 3%, which falls between that at Phoenix (2%) Spirit (5%) sites. m) could be identified both surface panorama same curve as average near-field rocks. (27.5 cm/pixel) ?500 m includes several rocky ejecta craters 4–5% curves, similar northern western areas. As result, abundances observed orbit those viewed surface. These measurements are consistent with thermal imaging estimates larger pixel well expectations fragmentation theory an impacted Amazonian/Hesperian lava flow.

REGIONAL GEOLOGY AND ROCK DISTRIBUTIONS OF THE MARS PHOENIX LANDING SITE. T. Heet

Introduction: In May 2008 the Phoenix Lander descended into the north polar region of Mars. It landed at 68.22 N, 234.25 E in a shallow valley about 20 km west of a 10 km crater named Heimdall. Phoenix imaged local geomorphology, determined local ice table depth and analyzed 19 soil samples from within a ~15 m 2 work volume. Important to

Rock Size-frequency Distributions at the Mars Exploration Rover Landing Sites: Impact Hazard and Accessibility

Introduction: The Viking and Mars Pathfinder landing sites and a wide variety of rocky locations on the Earth show size-frequency distributions that follow an exponential when expressed in cumulative fractional area covered by rocks of a given diameter or larger versus diameter plots. Mars lander rock distributions have been fit by an equation of the form: Fk(D) = k exp [-q(k) D], where Fk(D) i...

Perchlorate Salt Effects on Rock Weathering on Mars at the Phoenix Landing Site

Statement of the problem: The Phoenix Mission was the first to land in the polar regions on Mars. The mission revealed three surprising results: (1) The surface at the landing site had a very low concentration of large size rocks, (2) The unexpectedly sticky nature of the soil prevented it initially from falling through one of the instrument’s screens as planned, (3) Perchlorate salt was found ...

Evidence for calcium carbonate at the Mars Phoenix landing site.

Carbonates are generally products of aqueous processes and may hold important clues about the history of liquid water on the surface of Mars. Calcium carbonate (approximately 3 to 5 weight percent) has been identified in the soils around the Phoenix landing site by scanning calorimetry showing an endothermic transition beginning around 725 degrees C accompanied by evolution of carbon dioxide an...
